Today’s phone comes to you from the Big Apple Central Park South JW Marriott Essex House in New York City. I stayed here in March while attending at grand opening for a project I worked on at the Empire State Building and let me tell you, I was quite impressed by the 9641G phone that was in my guest room.
The 9641G is part of the 96xx IP phones released by Avaya in the late 2000’s. These phones were designed to work with the Avaya Aura-One X, and IP Office platform. There are many models: 9601, 9608, 9611, 9620, 9621, 9630, 9640, 9650, and 9670. These phones can either run on H.323 proprietary firmware for Avaya Call Servers or SIP firmware that can run on any SIP server.
The phones are designed to be quite minimal but yet aesthetically pleasing. They contain the original Merlin/Definity ring tones developed in the late 1980’s but on H.323 firmware, they also contain “rich” ring tones which have a more contemporary sound.
I was very impressed that the hotel had 2 of these phones in my guest room. The display has touch screen icons that allow you to select certain services at the hotel. I did play around with the options and settings selection, but unfortunately the hotel wouldn’t allow you to access these. Darn.
Well she is quite the beauty to go with a very beautiful hotel. Thank you JW Marriott Essex House for providing such a great phone in my guest room.
